ABEL DASHIAN'S WORLD DOESN'T NEED A HERO
Duisberg is one of thousands of planets plunged into darkness and chaos by the collapse of the galactic republic, but where other worlds have begun to rebuild a star-travelling culture, Duisberg remains in an uneasy balance between mud-brick civilization and bloodthirsty barbarism.
The people of Duisberg have a god Zentrum, a supercomputer from the ancient past. Zentrum has decided avoid another collapse by preventing civilization from rising from where it is. And because even a supercomputer and the powerful religion which it founded cannot block all progress, Zentrum has another tool every few centuries the barbarians sweep in from the desert, slaughtering the educated classes and cowing the peasants back into submission. These are the Blood Winds, and the Blood Winds are about to blow again.
This time, however, there's a difference Abel Dashian, son of a military officer, has received into his mind the spirit of Raj Whitehall, the most successful general in the history of the planet Bellevue--and of Center, the supercomputer which enabled Raj to shatter his planet's barbarians and permit the return of civilization.
One hero can't stop the tide of barbarians unless he has his own culture supporting him. To save Duisberg, Abel must break the power of Zentrum.
With the help of Raj and Center, Abel Dashian must become . . . THE HERETIC!

The Heretic Raj Whitehall Book 9 eBook David Drake Tony Daniel
This is a series book, series plotted by David Drake and written by second tier authors from Baen Books. The premise is that the interstellar empire fell, and everyone retreated to the iron age to 1600s on various planets.
However, some super AI computers survived, and can link with people to restore the empire by rising from the tech ashes.
The series at first was quite good, then the assigned author became tier one and had less time to spend on the novels. The next new author was also tier one, and phoned it in.
This newest author is quite good at writing, and sketches a deep main character and some great scenes.
However, part of the fun of the series is the computer link to the viewpoint character, and a second (now long dead) computer simulation/adviser who was a successful general. The new author did not write these characters well at all.
In addition, large portions of the plot were mishandled to fit the framework Drake set out. The amount of suspension of disbelief was too much several times.
Just as bad, a decision was made to have the portion of the world where the conflict took place be the only portion of the world. Ice Planet Hoth?

The Heretic Raj Whitehall Book 9 eBook David Drake Tony Daniel Reviews
Drake writes the best history as science fiction. Do read these in order.
I love the Raj Whitehall stories. But this one is an installment not a complete book. I have to buy another book (or is it two?) to get the complete story. That is why it isn't five stars. Yes I like these books A LOT. But I really felt let down when I got to the last virtual page and found that it was just the first installment. What a let down. -(
This is a good story for those who have read the first books. Fortunately, the next book is out. I am looking forward to it.
This is the beginning of the next Raj Whitehall series, and as such there has to be an expectation that the story in the book is not complete. I found the setting interesting and the characters while fairly simple were rather engaging. The Computer and Raj are different from the S.M. Stirling's take on them, and you can feel that quite clearly.
Unlike other books in the series where the Center basically assists technical progress, in this book it has a worthy opponent - another computer bent on technological stasis, which opens up a different field of problems and intrigues.
Overall a very decent read.
Tony Daniel does an excellent job of shepherding the General series along, this time with the antagonist being a flawed Center-esque super computer. The characters were more than one-dimensional and the story kept it a page-turner, but there are a couple of reasons it loses a star (4 instead of 5). The first is that there wasn't enough 'fighty stuff' going on. The previous books were rich with well-thought out combat sequences that varied in scope and circumstance (which is honestly why I buy the military sci-fi genre). The second is that while Tony Daniel is an excellent writer, he's not S.M. Stirling or Eric Flint. His effort was admirable and I look forward to the next novel, but it wasn't quite the same rapturous experience as the previous entries in the series.
Well this is a new book in the post-General Series, which is one of my favorite series of all time. That being said, this clearly wasn't written by David Drake and having his by-line on the cover is a little misleading.
The story was decent and similar to the 3 books or so that cover the post unification portion of the General series, where Raj and the Computer are disembodied computer simulacra embedded in a drop pod. This was done excellently by SM Stirling in The Chosen & The Reformer.
On the other hand I found this writer, Tony Daniel, distinctly weaker. The action was more plodding and it felt like this was ground that had been covered before. Indeed, this feels like a weak re-write of The Reformer with a less memorable main character.
Tony Daniel is sure no Eric Flint. In "The Heretic", the dialog is wooden, the characters develop not a bit, the politics are boring, and the action sequences are described so poorly that you can't visualize what's going on. Center's visions have lost their didactic purpose and interrupt the narration for...no discernible purpose. Meanwhile, Raj just sits in his virtual corner, smirking. Oh well, it was a nice series while it lasted.
