It would be delightful to have this book made into a movie. Samuel W Baker is a 'card'....he's a British VIP-like guy who camps out, hunts on the run, and calls it as he sees it. I admit, the book starts slow, and I was almost going to put it down around page 15....then suddenly started to get into it.I spent two weeks of my life in Cyprus and would agree....it's a place in bad need of management and creativity. Yeah, the locals tend to blame everything on the British, the invaders, and the Turks....but they never seem to get themselves moving on anything. Baker saw this in 1879, and described the various issues correctly.
So, an enjoyable read.....deep into way that things worked, and cultural differences. I'd have gone camping with Samuel W Baker.....any day of the week.

Cyprus as I Saw It in 1879 Samuel White Sir Baker 18211893 9781361683347 Books Reviews
Excellently written view of Cyprus from 1879 from the perspective of a British traveller whose opinion of the island is both good and bad. Much of what he has written about is still relevant and interesting, many of the places he visited have changed beyond recognition but others are still recognisable. Well worth the read.
Could not get into this book at all. I would probably put that down to the fact that I have spent time in Cyprus (1989 & 1996) for 7 months each time and could not relate to what I saw, to what it would have been like in 1879. Would not recommend it as a good read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this informative point of view of Cyprus that a visitor to the Island wrote in 1879. As Cypriot born, but raised away from the island, it was nice to read what my homeland was like, what life was like back in that era, as I have visited Cyprus often & was touched to see some of the similarities that there were as well as the many difference in life and appearance. I would recommend this book to all Cypriots whether living on the Island or not & others interested in culture, history etc
